Anime Me Stories

-Interview with Anime Me Winner: Esther Tan

Klik.TV: Tell us about yourself.

Esther: I am just a pretty average person who doesn’t really stand out from the crowd, but I’ve always loved to imagine things that aren’t possible in real life. Most of the time, I am day-dreaming; thinking of the surreal world, which is really impossible for the real world. After dreaming; I would have to face the harsh reality of the world again, and I accepted it. It’s real, and I can’t escape from it. I have to work for my own school fees. Often missing out on some things, but it’s life. And I can and must be able to cope with it.

Klik.TV: What’s your ambition and dreams?

Esther: My ambition is to run my own business when I grow up, as soon as possible, or when I have the ability to do it. Being a mangaka was one of my dreams. Much more of a dream than an ambition. To open a cafe where one can be able to relax, with a soothing environment; warm and cozy. Having a corner where you can read manga too. By having a Cafe, I can get inspiration from the people who visits my cafe, to be able to create stories with my free time.

Klik.TV: What’s your favourite anime and why?

Esther: My favorite anime is Mononoke, which is a spin-off from 2006’s horror series; Ayakashi: Samurai Horror Tales. The drawings, the plot, the layout. Are all unique. Different from most of the anime in the market. The story plot, is a mix of tradition and mystery and magic. which appeals to me very much. They colours, the drawings attracted me. It was an anime much different from the rest. With magic in the drawings; can I say? Surrealism. I also like Studio Ghibli’s works. All the stories are so magical. I love to watch them over and over again with my free time.

Klik.TV: What’s your inspiration behind your winning story idea for Anime Me?

Esther: This might sound ridiculous but actually, I was thinking of the interview. About the questions they will ask me. Like giving me an object, and asking me to make a story out of it. I imagined an object which was a soap; and from there ideas begin to form in my head. And so, the Bubble Prince was born from this. I was actually walking to the market when I got this idea.

-Interview with Anime Me Winner: Patrick Ngo

Klik.TV: Tell us about yourself.

Patrick: I’m a self employed Yangqin/Percussion instructor who teaches Chinese orchestral music in various schools in Singapore. I graduated from Central Conservatory of Music,Beijing obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Yangqin performing arts. I started watching anime at the age of 12. I like comedies as well as horror movies. I’m sociable, funny and very imaginative.

When i was younger, I thought of becoming a manga artist but due to my poor drawing talent, I gave up the idea. My elders preferred that I study hard and get a good, stable job. However, studying is never my strength and i turned to music in the end.

I always believe that in a lot of animes, there are educational messages inside like friendship bonds, justice, never give up, overcoming problems etc. All these hidden messages actually motivate me a lot in the real world. Lots of people think it’s childish to watch anime but I’m still proud of being an anime fan now as a grown up. Sometimes, I get lots of inspirations and ideas

Participating in this competition is a good way to express my support in anime and also a great chance to see my story becoming an anime. It’s a fun experience for me. Thanks Klik.TV for creating such a great opportunity for anime lovers!

Klik.TV: What do you want to be? What’s your ambition or dream?

Patrick: I have always wanted to be someone who can make impacts in people’s lives. Be it a passionate educator who teaches skill and knowledge or a comedian who bring laughter or a creator who creates things with value or ideas that changes lives etc. My dream is to be a mixture with all 3 in the above mentioned.

Klik.TV: What’s your favorite anime and why?

Patrick: It would be ONE PIECE by Eiichiro Oda.The drawing of the anime is very unique and the story line is very unusual and original.Their adventure is always full of surprises and you will never know what kind of enemies will turn up next. The idea of the fruit user is so powerful that anything in the world can be use as a material for the anime. A very refreshing anime and very emotional triggered. Great music too. It always keeps me interested in what’s gonna happen next.

Klik.TV: What inspired you to come up with this idea for Anime Me?

Patrick: The first thing that comes in my mind is “what if” since it opens up to lots of imagination and the sky is the limit. I start to think of lots of ideas like WHAT IF a guy can turn into a girl at night? WHAT IF a girl could not control her split personality? Then i was thinking about my horoscope Gemini and then BINGO! WHAT IF I was born with 2 hearts and how am I going to survive living like a normal person? Haha! Thats how the idea came about. I got excited and started typing.

-How We picked our Anime Me Winners!

Anime is an art form and from what we saw – there were a lot of ideas coming in. We had the good, the interesting, the colourful and the confusing! A lot of the stories weren’t as complete as we wanted them to be, but we thank everyone for writing in.

Ultimately, we picked our winners based on:

> Inspiration & Originality: was there an original voice?

> Potential: did it have what it takes to make into a film / series?

> Scale: a lot of people wrote in with huge scale ideas which we simply couldn’t adapt into a short film – unless we managed to raise a million dollars

We are hard at work now trying to take YOUR ideas to make them into anime films. Stay tuned.

Here’s what the judges had to say about the winners:

WINNER # 1: THE BUBBLE PRINCE – Baburu no ōji バブルの王子 by Esther Tan Zi Ji – Singapore

Marc Handler said: “This is my favorite idea in the group — the scene in the shop works — the way she gets the soap works — and the scene where the soap turns into bubbles and the boy emerges out of the bubbles is great — a good original idea that is visual and can be animated…”

Rita Majkut said: “An ode to Dickens and Dahl! I like the mixing of myths and childhood fears. What is more fun than a witch stealing the childhood of little boys? Who doesn’t want to outsmart a frightening, old witch and have a mysterious, boy prince magically show up in your bathroom? I love the idea of boys turning themselves into pieces of soap in order to foil the witch’s evil doings! Very unique! This could be a good, scary tale.”

Klik.TV said: “Fairytale like and whimsical, but also dark!”

WINNER # 2: THE GEMINI HEART by Patrick Ngo – Singapore

Marc Handler said: “This is a story — it has a beginning, middle, dialogue, you can follow the story, it has specific scenes and specific events. However, there’s no ending — we don’t know how the boy responds to the 2 girls when he wakes up — nor how the girls respond to each other — nor how it ends — also, the idea of the story is that the boy has two hearts, but how do we see that in animation? — how does his split personality show itself?” (Editor’s note: we’ll be working with Patrick on this)

Rita Majkut said: “This story would make for a good romantic comedy. It has all of characters for the audience to root for: the popular guy, the quiet musician, the cheerleader. Although a young love triangle has certainly been done before, the double heart angle keeps it fresh. There is a built in audience for this material.”

Klik.TV said: “This was pretty groovy – a guy with two hearts? We’re going to produce something interesting with this one!”

WINNER # 3: ANYA – The Girl Who Could Listen to Buildings by Azisa Noor – Bandung Indonesia

Marc Handler said: “This is a very interesting idea — the idea of someone who can listen to buildings and learn their histories and their stories.”

Rita Majkut said: “I wish the writer had given the entire story rather than the teaser version! I want to know what the secret to the city is. This might be a wonderful idea but I just don’t know given the existing entry.” (Editor’s note: we’ll be working on developing this)

Klik.TV said: “Visually inspiring, romantic, inspiring, challenging. A lot of potential.”

This story also tells us to open our eyes and see things in another prespective. Also to believe somebody else other than ourselves, just like the way Amane trusted tsumuri.

Why does this story deserve to be made as an anime?
Because this shows us, that being different isn’t wrong. It shows us that we’re all the same.
Not all people that are pretty on the outside are also the same in the inside.
This story made me realize, dont be scared to be different, cause it’s who you are
and the people around should accept her as just the same as they recieved others around.
